Creating Value and Optimizing Leading Generation with Content Marketing

Content Marketing and Lead Generation Survey

Recent Survey from Customer Think finds Improving Content Marketing is the #1 Priority for 2012 Lead Generation

This weekend, there were several great blog posts about the continued focus and importance of content marketing in the lead generation space, including an interesting Customer Think post about a recent survey of lead generation priorities in 2012.  According to this survey, “Improving Content Marketing Strategy” was identified as a top priority going into the new year.

This finding of course is not surprising. It’s what drives action. It’s what drives engagement. With great content you can improve the effectiveness of Paid Search, lead conversion on your website, lead nurturing programs, event marketing, social media efforts, and search engine optimization.

So it begs the question, how do we improve our content marketing strategies?

We as B2B marketers need to start with a laser focus on creating and delivering value with the content we produce. Your prospect’s time, contact details, and permission to engage is the cost of admission to your content. And ensuring there is an equal exchange of value can help increase conversions and drive results.

Knowing how to create value for your audience comes from having an in-depth understanding of what is important to them and how your content can help them do their jobs better.

Value can be created for prospects in a variety of ways. As you scope future content programs for your B2B lead generation efforts, ask yourself:

  • Does it help save my prospect or customer time?
  • Does it help them understand an important business challenge and how they can solve it?
  • Does it effectively outline approaches and options to solving problems?
  • Does it provide validation of approaches and ROI from industry experts?
  • Is it easy to consume, reuse, repackage, share?
  • Does it help them tell their story internally?

Creating compelling and valuable content on an ongoing basis is probably one of the biggest challenges that we as B2B marketers face, but the results when we get it right are worth the investment.
